Last summer’s Rejoicing Spirits consultation revealed that a number of congregations augment their worship with the use of colorful handbells. A sample set may be found here.
Kristen Newill, at Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit in Emmaus, Pennsylvania shared that their Rejoicing Ringers ensemble consists of nine members, each person playing two to three handbells or hand chimes. Members accompany the piano and congregation by providing chordal support as hymns are sung, following cues from designated leaders. Some participants receive additional guidance from adults as needed. The group typically accompanies three to four songs per service and holds practice sessions three to four times monthly. Annually, they integrate the Rejoicing Spirits community into a regularly scheduled Sunday service.
Rainey Smith, King of Glory Lutheran Church in Dallas, Texas shared that their ringers are free to select the color of handbell they wish to play and follow visual cues and on-screen instructions indicating when to play or pause. This participation occurs during various parts of worship, including opening and closing segments. Individuals also have the opportunity to play drums, tambourines, and other instruments as part of the musical experience.
