Meet Nathan, a resident of Des Moines who now proudly introduces himself as an artist. He was recently commissioned to create a special project for Rejoicing Spirits in Des Moines, but this confident self-identity is the result of a lengthy journey of transformation.
Nathan’s association with Mosaic, the parent organization of Rejoicing Spirits, began more than a decade ago. At that time, he was living in a group home and often struggled finding happiness, seeking ways to connect more deeply with his community. His path changed when Katie Flippen, the Public Relations Specialist for Mosaic in Central Iowa, encouraged him to attend an art class at Drake University.
“He did it, but did it a bit begrudgingly. Nonetheless, he came and started drawing,” Katie said. “I remember looking over at him and saying, ‘Man, Nathan, I didn’t know you were an artist!’”
This simple acknowledgment sparked a transformation.
"His whole expression changed, and he said, ‘I’m an artist!’ He laid claim to it right then and there. That was his role in life and he was going to be an artist.”
Since then, Nathan has embraced this identity, and even introduces himself by saying, “Hi, my name is Nathan, and I’m an artist!”
Sometime later, through the Mosaic at Home® program, Nathan transitioned to living with his Home Provider, Adam. Discovering that Nathan’s aunt—a stained glass artist—lived about 45 minutes from Des Moines, Adam began taking Nathan to her studio once a week. There he developed his skills working with stained glass.
Nathan has since participated in three art exhibits with other artists served by Mosaic in Central Iowa in collaboration with the Freedom of Expression Project.
Megan Clausen, pastor at Faith Lutheran Church in Clive, Iowa—both a partner of Mosaic and an acquaintance of Nathan—recognized his talent and potential. After securing funding, she invited Nathan to design a stained glass processional cross for worship, not only for the congregation’s upcoming Rejoicing Spirits program but also for general worship services.
Nathan is delighted to offer his artistic skills to Faith Lutheran Church. This opportunity to be commissioned for a piece so central to congregational worship has deepened his connection to his faith and spirituality.
